Basic Knowledge of Fabrics

-
Width (Fabric Width): The effective width of the fabric.
-
Yarn Count:
- Warp Yarn: The lengthwise direction of the fabric.
- Weft Yarn: The widthwise direction of the fabric.

- Yarn:
- The finer the yarn, the softer the fabric.
- S (Count): The higher the count, the finer the fabric.
- D (Denier): For synthetic fibers, the higher the D, the coarser the fabric.
- UM (Micron): For top fibers, the higher the micron, the coarser the fabric.
- Polyester-Cotton (TC):
- Polyester accounts for more than 60%, and cotton accounts for less than 40%.
-
Cotton-Polyester (CVC):
- Cotton accounts for more than 60%, and polyester accounts for less than 40%.
6, Fabric Weight
- Regular fabric weight: g/m (grams per meter)
- Silk fabric weight: mm (momme)
- Denim fabric weight: OZ (ounce)
- Knitted fabric weight: kg (kilogram)
6, Fabric Price
- Woven fabric: Yuan per meter
- Knitted fabric: Yuan per kilogram
- Denim fabric: Yuan per yard
7, Width Conversion
- Regular fabric: g/m
- g/m width = g/m²
- 1mm = 4.3056g/m²
- 1oz = 28.3465g
- 1kg = 1000g
8, Length Conversion Units
- Regular fabric length units: m (meter), in (inch)
- Denim fabric: Y (yard)
- 1in = 2.54cm = 0.0254m
- 1y = 0.9144m
Fabric Weight
The higher the fabric weight, the thicker the fabric, but this is not absolute. The thickness of the fabric is related to the yarn count and tightness, and the weight is just a reference value.
- Short-sleeved T-shirt: 100% cotton with micro-elasticity, moisture-absorbent and breathable.
- Long-sleeved T-shirt: 95% cotton and 5% spandex (Function of spandex: increase elasticity and comfort). It is elastic, soft and skin-friendly, moisture-absorbent and breathable.
- Long-sleeved T-shirt: 50% modal, 45% cotton and 5% spandex (Modal: soft and smooth, good water absorption and breathability). The long-sleeved T-shirt is elastic, soft and skin-friendly, moisture-absorbent and breathable, with fine drape.
9. Weight of Down Jackets
The weight ranges from 100 grams to 1000 grams.
- Warm climate (above 0°C): 100 grams to 200 grams.
- Cold climate (-10°C to 0°C): 300 grams to 500 grams.
- Extremely cold climate (below -30°C): more than 600 grams.
